It doesn’t say who the photographer is, so, I can’t credit him, but it was taken in Hyogo, Japan, and the tree is a Prunus Yedoensis, also known as a Yoshino Cherry. It is certainly a stunner. But it remains virgin temperate rain forest. I realised that there is no easy way of painting ferns. The two sides have to match up, and be the right length etc .. don't think I'm going to be painting any more. But I do love this painting. The scene is derived from various photographs taken in Victoria , Australia. Once again there is purple and green contrast which I favoured around this time. I didn’t know that either . This scene is also taken from some photos of the valley in New Zealand featured in the copse . Once again I have simplified the forms and attempted to create an ~otherwordly feeling. It’s one of only a few of my paintings to feature a blue sky. I was pleased with the clouds. I was going to call this one islands in the stream but.. with all due respect to Dolly and Kenny...I googled to find out they are an "ait" or an "eyot". I've always liked them. The idea that one could jump from one to another and so traverse the river. This one came out looking a little like a submerged dragon, but I never mind when these animals turn up in paintings. This was the first time in ages that I painted a blue sky and some fluffy clouds. It came out as a really happy picture. A little "Lucy in the Sky" with tangerine trees and cellophane flowers. We used to have to park the car and walk to the beach, and the excitement I felt as we stood on the ridge looking down on the beach has never left me. The landscape itself has been modified by trips to more exotic places. I had the same feeling when I first saw the amazing blues of the Mediterranean, and I hope this joy comes across to you. I had always had it in mind to paint my version of a "tree of life" and this is the result. I immediately felt at home in the circular format. I painted it in quite a traditional way. The rest of the canvas is a sort of frame within a frame. It has now become a format I have adopted. I have attempted to capture this joyous feeling a few times in the past, with mixed success. I thought the subject might suit the circular format as I could concentrate purely on the foliage and not worry too much about the corners and I think it has worked out pretty well. It is certainly a very happy painting which will brighten up any wall. I have used the rest of the canvas to frame the painting with complimentary colors and have had a simple frame made for it which is painted white. All very harmonious I think. Pink and orange These birches were crying out to get painted into one of my circular canvasses. I was able to focus on the wonderful contrast between the white bark and the intense colors of autumn behind them. I decided to include the bark motif in the inner frame and was happy with the result. The outer color is an intense deep violet and I have had a solid wood box frame made for it which I have painted in my oils and matched the color of the bark. It's a slightly muted lilac.. not sure if that comes across in the photos.. but it works well in reality. (The dark wood from "wind in the Willows") and I love the color and feel of moss .. its velvet quality. It's these two aspects of the wood that I have tried to convey here. The beauty within the decay. The strange shapes of the broken tree boughs as nature reclaims the nutrients back into the soil. The slightly musty smell. Wonderful! I have painted the outer frame a lush deep green to compliment and have had a solid wood frame made for it which I have painted with the same color as in the painting. It's difficult to get a totally accurate photograph of this because it changes with the quality of the light upon it. All I can say is that I have painted it quite a few times before I think I have the perfect hue to compliment the green. It's a dusky lilac. I have added hanging wire. It's ready for the wall. I didn’t know that either . This scene is also taken from some photos of the valley in New Zealand featured in the copse . Once again I have simplified the forms and attempted to create an ~otherwordly feeling. It’s one of only a few of my paintings to feature a blue sky. I was pleased with the clouds. I was going to call this one islands in the stream but.. with all due respect to Dolly and Kenny...I googled to find out they are an "ait" or an "eyot". I've always liked them. The idea that one could jump from one to another and so traverse the river. This one came out looking a little like a submerged dragon, but I never mind when these animals turn up in paintings. This was the first time in ages that I painted a blue sky and some fluffy clouds. It came out as a really happy picture. A little "Lucy in the Sky" with tangerine trees and cellophane flowers. We used to have to park the car and walk to the beach, and the excitement I felt as we stood on the ridge looking down on the beach has never left me. The landscape itself has been modified by trips to more exotic places. I had the same feeling when I first saw the amazing blues of the Mediterranean, and I hope this joy comes across to you. I had always had it in mind to paint my version of a "tree of life" and this is the result. I immediately felt at home in the circular format. No more painting to the corners.. just focus on the important bits in the middle! The foliage seems to like to fill the space at the top and the roots at the bottom. I painted it in quite a traditional way. The rest of the canvas is a sort of frame within a frame. It has now become a format I have adopted. I have had box frames made and painted them with my oils to match the colors perfectly. I have attempted to capture this joyous feeling a few times in the past, with mixed success. I thought the subject might suit the circular format as I could concentrate purely on the foliage and not worry too much about the corners and I think it has worked out pretty well. It is certainly a very happy painting which will brighten up any wall. I have used the rest of the canvas to frame the painting with complimentary colors and have had a simple frame made for it which is painted white. All very harmonious I think. Pink and orange These birches were crying out to get painted into one of my circular canvasses. I was able to focus on the wonderful contrast between the white bark and the intense colors of autumn behind them. I decided to include the bark motif in the inner frame and was happy with the result. The outer color is an intense deep violet and I have had a solid wood box frame made for it which I have painted in my oils and matched the color of the bark. It's a slightly muted lilac.. not sure if that comes across in the photos.. but it works well in reality. (The dark wood from "wind in the Willows") and I love the color and feel of moss .. its velvet quality. It's these two aspects of the wood that I have tried to convey here. The beauty within the decay. The strange shapes of the broken tree boughs as nature reclaims the nutrients back into the soil. The slightly musty smell. Wonderful! I have painted the outer frame a lush deep green to compliment and have had a solid wood frame made for it which I have painted with the same color as in the painting. It's difficult to get a totally accurate photograph of this because it changes with the quality of the light upon it. All I can say is that I have painted it quite a few times before I think I have the perfect hue to compliment the green. It's a dusky lilac. I have added hanging wire. It's ready for the wall.
