Beach Trees

70 x 90 cms

This is the first painting where I began to simplify the shapes. It looks a little clumsy now, but at the time it was really exciting.. I was moving towards abstraction. I was becoming a serious artist! After this one I was no longer happy with an accurate representation of a scene , or even an impressionistic one. The daubs had been replaced with considered areas of colour.

I like the colours here. The cobalt contrasts nicely with the lime green and the pink. I wasn't sure what exactly the scene was through the trees.. but the area on the far left looked a little like the sea, so it became a beach scene. Reminds me of the Greek island of Spetse where the pine trees grow on the beach.
